How to Read a Certificate of Analysis

What Is a Certificate of Analysis?

A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is a document provided by a manufacturer or supplier that summarizes the analytical testing results for a specific batch of a product. For research peptides, a COA provides important information about the identity, purity, and quality of the compound.

Reviewing the COA before using a research peptide is an important step in maintaining research integrity and ensuring the material meets your laboratory's quality expectations.

Key Components of a Peptide COA

Product Name

The full name of the peptide compound, which should match the product you ordered.

Batch or Lot Number

A unique identifier assigned to a specific production batch. This number allows the product to be traced back to its manufacturing and testing records.

Purity

Purity is typically expressed as a percentage and indicates the proportion of the target compound relative to total detected substances. Higher purity values indicate fewer impurities. Research-grade peptides commonly report purity values determined by HPLC analysis.

Identity Confirmation

Identity testing confirms that the compound is what it is represented to be. This is commonly performed using mass spectrometry (MS), which measures the molecular weight of the compound and compares it to the expected value.

Appearance

A description of the physical characteristics of the product, such as "white lyophilized powder."

Analytical Method

The testing method used to determine purity and identity, such as HPLC, LC-MS, or other recognized laboratory techniques.

Date of Analysis

The date the analytical testing was performed. This helps researchers assess the age of the testing data relative to the product.

Testing Laboratory

For third-party tested products, the name of the independent laboratory that performed the analysis.

What to Look For

When reviewing a COA, researchers should verify that the product name and batch number match the product received, that purity meets their research requirements, and that identity has been confirmed using an appropriate analytical method.
