Introduction
KPV is a tripeptide consisting of the amino acids lysine, proline, and valine (Lys-Pro-Val). It is derived from the C-terminal sequence of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH) and has been studied in laboratory settings primarily for its anti-inflammatory properties and interactions with melanocortin receptors.
Relationship to Alpha-MSH
Alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH) is a 13-amino acid neuropeptide derived from proopiomelanocortin (POMC). It exerts anti-inflammatory effects through activation of melanocortin receptors, particularly MC1R and MC3R. KPV represents the C-terminal tripeptide of α-MSH and has been shown in research models to retain significant anti-inflammatory activity despite its much smaller size.
Melanocortin Receptor Interactions
Research has investigated KPV's ability to interact with melanocortin receptors, particularly MC1R expressed on immune cells and peripheral tissues. Activation of these receptors has been associated with downregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokine production, including TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6, in cell-based assay systems.
