What Is Peptide Purity?
Peptide purity refers to the proportion of the target peptide compound relative to all other substances present in a sample. It is typically expressed as a percentage. A peptide with 98% purity contains 98% of the intended compound, with the remaining 2% consisting of impurities such as synthesis byproducts, truncated sequences, or residual reagents.
How Is Purity Measured?
The most common method for measuring peptide purity is High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). In HPLC analysis, the sample is separated into its components, and the relative area of each peak in the chromatogram is used to calculate the percentage of each component. The purity percentage reported on a Certificate of Analysis typically reflects the area percentage of the target peptide peak.
Mass spectrometry (MS) is also used in conjunction with HPLC to confirm the identity of the primary peak, ensuring that the dominant component is the correct compound.
Why Does Purity Matter in Research?
Purity is an important consideration in research because impurities can potentially interfere with experimental results. When working with research peptides, higher purity generally means a more defined and consistent research material. Researchers should consider their specific experimental requirements when evaluating purity specifications.
Common Purity Levels
Research peptides are commonly available at various purity levels. Higher purity peptides undergo more extensive purification processes and are generally preferred for sensitive research applications. The appropriate purity level depends on the specific research context and experimental design.
Reviewing Purity on a COA
When reviewing a Certificate of Analysis, researchers should look for the purity value, the analytical method used to determine it, and the date of analysis. This information helps assess the quality and suitability of the material for the intended research application.
